All Hail The Classic Checkered Slip-on Vans
Check out “T” doing some sick skill work for his “GET UP”.. Working with a shoe or flip flop is much harder then it looks.. Great for control and body awareness. There has been allot of talk of body awareness lately around the gym. So lets get into it…. What is true body awareness?… Knowing when enough is enough, or possibly knowing when enough ISN’T enough? Being able to control each and every movement with impeccable form, possibly? I don’t know the full definition, but Our idea of “body awareness” is just knowing how to manipulate the movement and never lose control or understanding of what your doing. For example; when kipping although its a violent, powerful movement you can still manage to manipulate some shoulder retraction at the right time to stabilize your rotators and to not tear your self straight out of the socket. The higher level of that would be knowing how to have that body control and awareness and still be able to fire out 25 kips in a high intensity fashion. So instead of just throwing your body through thrusters letting it flop up and down like a dead fish you have control of the bar and are able to control your hips and control your physical environment. You manipulate every aspect of your movement, knowing what your doing through each step.
Another aspect of body awareness would be why we drive The Turkish Get Up into your brains. Aside all the strength and flexibility benefits, the slow movement and self control it takes to go through each of the 7 steps takes effort and body awareness. Every move you make is a decision; knowing your stable , solid, in the right position, aware of your next move, then a decision to move to the next step. Once you reach this next step you re-asses the entire movement again, creating a TON of body awareness. You know how to fire each and every single muscle it takes to solely stabilize that weight over head. Then you must manipulate your body through each and every step being aware of how its moving and where it needs to be strategically placed.
Body awareness might be one of the most important things to learn when becoming a better athlete. In our opinion we would have to go as far to say ” You don’t reach the next level until you gain major body awareness”. Body awareness is the difference between a 2min Fran and a sub 2min Fran.
