After eating and drinking the wrong things for three days, I will be back on the wagon tomorrow. If it wasn’t for the double unders, which I haven’t quite mastered, I’d predict a good rebound workout, but we’ll see…..

So I was reading the WOD for today… my thought process kind of went like this…

Wall balls? Yea! I can do that! Suh…weet.
KB Swings! I can Totes Ma’Gotes do that… This WOD is really looking good… wait, one more thing to do…

Double Unders??!! AAAwwweeee man.. there goes my time down the drain! :-)

Just like Hockey, Crossfit will keep my interest for a long time to come because there is always something to improve upon. (I’ll never be a great hockey player, but I love trying!) I’ll also never be great at EVERYTHING in Crossfit. There are just too many movements… too many things…

Today’s workout is re-inforcing that… as do many others, as do the Level sheets…

But that is exactly what motivates me to keep trying.. keep working… keep improving… and maybe one day I will be able to add one more thing to the “I am great at” list…

Will double unders be added to the list next? Perhaps… perhaps not… I’m already great at so many things… (like eating ice cream) so maybe there is room on the list to remove some things (like eating ice cream) to make room to add some things… (like double unders).

I was talking with my wife last night about crossfit and the “functional” movements. We started talking about activities and sports that one could do if they were taking some time off from CrossFit or didn’t even know about it. After some reflection, I think someone would be super fit in a “functional” way if they could do the following:
    1) walk and run regularly
    2) hike and climb rocks
    3) swim

I think those activities pretty much prepare you for any situation you are going to be in while giving you a great workout. Plus, they are relatively common activities that anyone can do during the summer if they have time.

Originally, I was going to add the following to the list:
    1) judo/wrestling,MMA: I added this because a lot of the work is with bodyweight. Plus, being able to defend yourself is functional, at least according to my definition of functional. I just don’t think it is reasonable to expect someone to be able to do this regularly.
    2) gymnastics: I didn’t include this one because the other activities are more authentic. Although some people might do handstands and other gymnastics moves on their own, I think the other three outlined above are easier and more accessible to the regular person.

What would you add or subtract from the list?

You have a lot of cardio and endurance… what about strength / power / speed ?

    Decathalon training! :-)

Ok.. but honestly… go build a deck in the back yard… or lay down a paver patio… or build a wall with 80lb blocks…. or dig a trench …. or shovel some snow… Oh, a great shoulder workout is to dig some holes for the concrete footings…

I was kind of thinking strength with the rock climbing. I also thought about yard work, or simply carrying a boulder – strong man type of stuff.

I have a pile of rocks in my yard. They were on the other side of the yard, but they migrated one by one. I also have a pile of rocks at the top of High Mt. They used to be at the bottom of the Mt. “Bucket-Runs!” I have also used “water cooler” jugs that have handles for a “farmer’s walk” type of thing. THey are not extraoridinarily heavy… I should weigh them. In Vermont. I have loaded a snow sled with 4 to 6 50 lb bags of feed and firewood and have dragged it around.

These are some types of functional movement stuff that have transfered into real life. For example, we have been in Adventure Races were we were required to carry, haul, drag and bitch-at two kayaks for over four miles down a barrier island beach or, in another race we were dropped off at the start line with a canoe and all of our gear and there was a Mountain between the start line and the river and we had to haul it up and over (you couldn’t drag it because that would create a hole). In another race we had to carry Mt bikes and claw our way up, what felt like a cliff-face.

And may I say alittle word to Bradley? Eat the freakin’ ice cream! Life is meant to be enjoyed! OK, sexy?

  10. Brad on December 22nd, 2009 1:56 am

What’s next Brad? This is blasphemy! Will you advocate abstaining from sex because it might impact upon your Fight Gone Bad score?

Do you “eat to live” or “live to eat?” Which best describes the theme of your life?

I say: sex and ice cream! Two treats in one!

  12. Brad on December 22nd, 2009 2:57 am

SCOT, you’ve convinced me! What’s the BEST ice cream out in the market today?? I want THAT! I will eat GALLONS at a time!!
